AAU
AAU VS USATF: WHICH DOES MY ATHLETE NEED?
· 7 min read · By Stride Nation Elite
Parents new to youth track often ask: do we need AAU, USATF, or both? The short answer for most Stride Nation Elite families: AAU membership is required; USATF may be added depending on your meet schedule.
AAU runs the most accessible youth meet circuit in our region — local meets, Gulf District championships, Region 17 qualifiers, and the Junior Olympic Games. This is where most of our athletes compete during the summer season.
USATF offers additional meet options and aligns with Olympic development standards. Some advanced athletes pursue USATF-sanctioned meets for national ranking and record opportunities.
Membership costs, age divisions, and qualifying standards differ between organizations. Neither replaces the other — they are parallel pathways. Your coach helps select meets that match your athlete's goals and experience level.
Start with AAU registration on our Join page. If USATF is needed, Operations will let you know before your athlete's first USATF-sanctioned meet.
