SPRINT MECHANICS EVERY YOUTH ATHLETE SHOULD MASTER
· 5 min read · By Stride Nation Elite
Sprint mechanics are the foundation of speed. Before athletes chase faster times, they need to move efficiently — tall posture, aggressive arm swing, and active foot strike under the hips.
Head position stays neutral, eyes forward. Shoulders stay relaxed; tension in the upper body wastes energy. Arms drive cheek-to-hip with a roughly 90-degree bend at the elbow.
Foot strike should be active — pulling the ground beneath the body, not reaching out front. Over-striding brakes momentum and increases injury risk for growing athletes.
Coaches at Stride Nation Elite use drill progressions — A-skips, B-skips, wickets, and form runs — to make mechanics automatic before max-effort reps.
Parents can reinforce one cue at a time at home: 'tall and relaxed' beats ten corrections at once. Consistency across practices builds lasting speed.
