BLOCK START TRAINING BASICS FOR YOUTH SPRINTERS

· 5 min read · By Stride Nation Elite

Starting blocks help sprinters convert stillness into explosive acceleration. But blocks are a tool — not a requirement on day one. Young athletes first master standing and crouch starts before block work.

Proper block setup places the front foot roughly two foot-lengths from the line and the back foot roughly three. Athletes set hips high, eyes down the track, and load tension without collapsing posture.

On 'set,' athletes rise slightly and hold stillness. On the gun, the back foot drives first — pushing the body forward, not up. The first three steps are the most critical part of any sprint race.

Coaches introduce blocks gradually, with low block angles for younger athletes and progressions as strength and coordination improve.

Ask your coach before purchasing blocks or spikes. We help families get the right equipment at the right stage of development.
